Description:

The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a striking marine fish known for its distinctive appearance and active swimming behavior. Its body features bold, alternating yellow and dark vertical bands adorned with lighter spots and stripes, complemented by large, sail-like dorsal and anal fins that contribute to its common name. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Sailfin Tangs inhabit coral-rich areas and lagoons, where they graze on algae.

In the home aquarium, Sailfin Tangs require ample space due to their potential adult size of up to 15 inches. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended to provide sufficient swimming room and to accommodate their active nature. These tangs are generally peaceful but can exhibit semi-aggressive behavior, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. It's advisable to house only one Sailfin Tang per tank unless the aquarium is exceptionally large.

Primarily herbivorous, Sailfin Tangs play a beneficial role in controlling algae growth within the aquarium. Their diet should consist mainly of marine-based algae and seaweed. Providing dried seaweed tied to a rock or using a veggie clip at least three times per week is beneficial. A diet rich in vegetable matter helps maintain their coloration and overall health.

Sailfin Tangs are considered reef-safe, as they typically do not harm corals or invertebrates. However, if underfed, they may nip at stony and soft corals. Ensuring a proper diet and regular feeding schedule can mitigate this behavior. Maintaining high water quality with efficient filtration and regular water changes is essential for their well-being.

With their impressive finnage, vibrant coloration, and algae-grazing habits, Sailfin Tangs make a valuable and attractive addition to large, well-maintained marine aquariums.
