Description:

The Harlequin Tuskfish (Choerodon fasciatus) is a striking marine species known for its vivid coloration and prominent blue teeth. Its bold blue, green, and orange bands make it an eye-catching addition to a saltwater aquarium, with specimens from Australian waters often displaying even more intense hues.

This species is native to the reefs of the western Pacific Ocean, where it inhabits areas with plenty of rock formations and crevices. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended for a juvenile, with larger tanks preferred to accommodate its potential growth and active nature.

The Harlequin Tuskfish is primarily carnivorous, feeding on crustaceans, mollusks, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, it thrives on a diet of chopped shrimp, squid, clams, and high-quality frozen foods. Feeding multiple times per day ensures optimal health and coloration.

While generally peaceful toward similar-sized tank mates, it can become territorial and may prey on small invertebrates, making it not ideal for reef aquariums with shrimp, crabs, or small fish. It does well with larger, semi-aggressive fish such as tangs, angelfish, puffers, and triggerfish.

Maintaining stable water parameters, strong filtration, and plenty of rockwork is essential for the Harlequin Tuskfish to thrive. A well-structured environment with caves and hiding spots helps reduce stress and mimic its natural habitat.

With its stunning coloration, active personality, and hardiness, the Harlequin Tuskfish makes a fascinating centerpiece fish in a large, well-maintained marine aquarium.
