Description:

The Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum), also known as the Spotted Tang, is a highly sought-after marine fish renowned for its striking appearance and rarity in the aquarium trade. Its body showcases a deep blackish-purple hue adorned with numerous small white spots, resembling a starry night sky, complemented by a vibrant yellow anal fin. This species is native to the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around regions like Mauritius, Madagascar, and South Africa, inhabiting coral and rocky reefs at depths ranging from 30 to 200 feet.

In captivity, Gem Tangs are considered hardy and adapt well to aquarium life when provided with appropriate conditions. A minimum tank size of 120 gallons is recommended to accommodate their active swimming behavior and territorial nature. They may exhibit aggression towards other tangs, especially those of the same genus (Zebrasoma), so it's advisable to house them singly or introduce them simultaneously with other tank mates in a spacious environment to minimize territorial disputes.

As herbivores, Gem Tangs primarily graze on algae in their natural habitat. In the aquarium, their diet should consist of regular offerings of marine-based seaweed and algae, such as nori sheets, to support their nutritional needs and bolster their immune system. Supplementing their diet with high-quality pellet foods and occasional meaty treats like mysis or brine shrimp can provide additional nutrition. Feeding nori on an algae clip several times a week is beneficial, ensuring any uneaten portions are removed promptly to maintain water quality.

Maintaining pristine water conditions is crucial for the health of Gem Tangs. Efficient filtration, regular water changes, and stable water parameters within the recommended ranges will help prevent common marine diseases and support overall well-being. While they are considered reef-safe and typically do not harm corals or invertebrates, providing ample live rock not only offers grazing surfaces but also establishes territories, reducing potential aggression.

Due to their limited distribution and the complexities involved in their collection, Gem Tangs are among the more expensive species in the marine aquarium trade.
