Overview:
The Coral Hogfish, also known as the Blackspot Hogfish or Mesothorax Hogfish, is a colorful and robust species that makes a striking addition to larger marine aquariums. With its vibrant orange-red body, bold black patch, and yellow accents, it adds movement and color to any tank. It’s a hardy fish that adapts well to various conditions but may show territorial tendencies.
Habitat and Behavior:
Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Coral Hogfish thrives in aquariums with plenty of rock structures and caves. They are semi-aggressive and may display dominance over smaller or more docile fish, so tankmates should be chosen carefully. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment.
Diet:
As a carnivore, the Coral Hogfish feeds on a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. High-quality marine pellets and frozen foods can also be included. Feed them 2-3 times daily to maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Care Tips:
The Coral Hogfish is a hardy species but requires a stable environment with good water quality. Provide plenty of hiding spots within the tank to help them feel secure. While generally reef-compatible, they may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp, crabs, or snails. Monitor their behavior closely in reef tanks.
