Bird Wrasse
Bird Wrasse
The Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is a sleek and active saltwater fish known for its elongated, beak-like snout, which it uses to probe rockwork and coral crevices for food. With its vibrant green (male) or brownish-green (female) coloration, the Bird Wrasse adds a dynamic and striking presence to a marine aquarium.
Growing up to 11 inches, this wrasse requires a minimum tank size of 125 gallons with plenty of open swimming space and secure rockwork for shelter. While hardy and easy to care for, the Bird Wrasse is not considered reef-safe, as it may prey on invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, and smaller fish. It is best suited for fish-only or predator tank setups.
An omnivore, the Bird Wrasse thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods like krill, shrimp, and squid, supplemented with marine pellets or flakes. Known for its intelligence and energetic behavior, this wrasse is a favorite among hobbyists looking for an engaging and robust addition to their tank.
