The Vlamingi Tang (Naso vlamingii), also known as the Bignose Unicornfish, is a large and active marine species renowned for its distinctive appearance and suitability for spacious home aquariums.

Quick Facts:

  • Max Size: Up to 24 inches (60 cm)
  • Lifespan: Up to 45 years in the wild
  • Minimum Tank Size: 300 gallons (recommended for adult specimens)
  • Diet: Omnivorous; primarily herbivorous when young, becoming more omnivorous with age
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful; can be semi-aggressive toward similar species
  • Reef Safe: Yes; does not typically harm sessile invertebrates

Appearance:

Juvenile Vlamingi Tangs exhibit a pale green coloration with light blue markings. As they mature, their coloration deepens to a brown or purple body adorned with vertical blue stripes and spots. A notable feature is the bulbous protrusion on their forehead, more pronounced in males, giving them the "unicornfish" moniker.

Habitat and Behavior:

In the wild, Vlamingi Tangs inhabit the Indo-Pacific region, frequenting deep lagoons and seaward reefs. They are active swimmers, often seen alone or in pairs, and occasionally in larger groups when feeding on zooplankton.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: Due to their potential size and activity level, a minimum tank size of 250 gallons is recommended for adult Vlamingi Tangs.
  • Aquascaping: Provide ample open swimming space along with rock formations or corals to offer hiding spots and sleeping areas.
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–25°C)
    • Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025
    • pH: 8.1–8.4
    • dKH: 8–12
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous when young, feeding on algae and seaweeds. As they mature, they become more omnivorous, accepting a variety of foods, including high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen preparations. Regular offerings of marine-based seaweed and algae are essential to maintain health and coloration.

Compatibility:

Vlamingi Tangs are generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior toward similar species, especially other tangs. They are suitable for both fish-only and reef aquariums, as they typically do not harm corals or invertebrates.

Considerations:

  • Growth Rate: Vlamingi Tangs grow rapidly, especially in their first five years, potentially reaching up to 24 inches. Ensure your aquarium can accommodate their growth to prevent stress and health issues.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for several decades, making them a long-term commitment for aquarists.
  • Activity Level: As active swimmers, they require ample space and may become stressed in confined environments.

Before acquiring a Vlamingi Tang, ensure you have the appropriate tank size and resources to accommodate their needs throughout their lifespan.

Note: Always research and consider the long-term care requirements of marine species before adding them to your aquarium to promote responsible fishkeeping and the well-being of the animals.
