Overview:
The Scopas Tang, also known as the Brown Tang or Twotone Tang, is a hardy and algae-grazing fish popular among reef aquarists. Its subtle beauty comes from its earthy tones, delicate striping, and graceful swimming behavior. This tang is ideal for hobbyists looking for a peaceful but active fish that also serves a practical role in keeping algae under control.
Habitat and Behavior:
Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, Scopas Tangs spend much of their time grazing on algae growing on live rock and tank surfaces. While they are generally peaceful, they can become semi-aggressive toward other tangs or fish with similar body shapes, especially in smaller aquariums. When keeping multiple tangs, introduce them at the same time to minimize territorial disputes.
Diet:
Scopas Tangs are herbivores and should be fed a diet rich in marine-based algae. Offer dried seaweed (nori), spirulina flakes, herbivore pellets, and blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini. Their natural grazing behavior helps with algae control in the aquarium.
Care Tips:
A spacious tank of at least 125 gallons is recommended to accommodate their active swimming needs and reduce aggression. They are generally reef-safe and will not harm corals or other invertebrates, but they may consume macroalgae if available. Ensure good water quality and provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
